CASE #001

Why does everything come in eights?

Logos. Icons. Interfaces. Even chessboards. It’s not a coincidence. It’s a system.

FIELD NOTES / THE 8-PIXEL GRID

First, you notice the spacing.

Eight. Sixteen. Twenty-four. Thirty-two. Lawrence opens a design file and finds the same numbers turning up in the margins, between the cards and around the buttons. The screen looks perfectly ordinary. That, he argues, is exactly the problem.

Ask the designer and you get a reasonable answer: consistency. A shared set of spacing values makes an interface easier to build and maintain. Lawrence writes REASONABLE ANSWER on a note and pins it to the board. Somehow, it looks more suspicious there.

Then the board gets bigger.

A chessboard enters the investigation. Eight squares across. Eight squares down. Next come icons, grids and a rapidly growing collection of screenshots. Red thread is deployed. A second lamp is switched on. A conclusion starts forming long before the evidence has agreed to it.

This is where the episode deliberately leaves the sensible explanation behind. A useful design convention becomes, in Lawrence’s hands, a secret language. Nobody has asked him to stop counting. Nobody has asked him to start, either.

“Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.”LAWRENCE / DESIGN CONSPIRATORS

The perfectly ordinary explanation.

Grids are tools. Repeated spacing can bring order to a layout, and designers choose systems that suit their products. Spotting the same number in two places does not establish a connection between them.

Lawrence has considered this explanation. Unfortunately, it does not require a wall covered in string. He is keeping the wall.

The question that remains.

Next time you open a design file, look at the numbers you reach for without thinking. Which decisions did you make yourself, and which ones did you inherit from a system? That is a useful question, even after the conspiracy has fallen apart.

The investigation closes with no arrests, several very neat margins and one host who is absolutely convinced he is onto something.

Design Conspirators is a satirical series by Designshot. Lawrence’s investigations are fictional. These field notes accompany a preview episode.
